Review: Tiny Whoop Brushless “Boost Juice” 802-19000Kv Motors

Ever since the micro brushless craze began last year, people have been waiting for an official Tiny Whoop brushless motor. Thanks to Mr. Tiny Whoop himself, Jessie Perkins, they’re finally here!

THE MOTORS

Last weekend the Micro FPV community was introduced to four variations of the new Tiny Whoop brushless motors. The Moose Juice 17,500Kv, Boost Juice 19,000Kv, Jiffy Juice 603 19,000Kv, and Double Deuce Juice 22,000Kv.

I got my hands on a set of the “Boost Juice 19,000Kv” brushless motors for a test build. They’re the middle Kv option and were described to me as fast without destroying your batteries. I felt like this was a good middle-ground. I chose a 1s battery build to test these motors for a better comparison to the 1s brushed rig I’m familiar with. There is a 2s option as well, but you’ll need a frame that holds (2) 1s batteries or a 2s pack.

THE BUILD

  • Frame: BETA65 PRO 1S BRUSHLESS TINY WHOOP FRAME
  • Motors: BOOST JUICE 802 19,000KV BRUSHLESS
  • Flight Controller/ESC: CRAZYBEE F4 PRO 1-2S BRUSHLESS
  • Props: Grey 31mm 4 Blade
  • Cam/VTX: FX900TW
  • Battery: TINY WHOOP HV 205MAH 1S LIPO

Building this micro quad was just as easy as building a regular brushed setup. A little bit of soldering, plugging in the motor wires, and a quick BETAFLIGHT setup will get you in the air quickly.

THE FLIGHT

The overall speed of the brushless motors wasn’t drastically higher than the top of the line Tiny Whoop brushed motors. The torque and authority that the brushless motors provide was very noticeable. I decided to treat it like a more powerful quad and fly in rate mode the entire time. These brushless motors offer a large increase in low-end power, authority, and throttle resolution. I think that these improvements will uplevel your flight experience and control in a major way. The low-end power increase helps with prop wash, catching tricks, and being able to fly aggressively with less throttle input. The increase in authority allows for more aggressive PID tuning and increased feel. The added throttle resolution improves the throttle feel and accuracy.

These improvements add up to an entirely new Tiny Whoop flight experience! Getting micro quads to fly like their 5″ mini quad brothers has been a challenge. I think these motors allowed me to get much closer to this desired feel. For the first time, I truly felt like I was flying a scale micro quadcopter. A big part of this is due to the improved yaw authority. It’s unbelievable. It feels 5x more precise and responsive than the brushed motor micros.

The change in the power curve was confidence inspiring. You no longer have to be in the top 20% of the throttle to fly aggressively. It feels more similar to the throttle range of a 3″ setup. The added thrust and responsiveness allows you to recover quicker from dives and incorporate more vertical flying into your runs. It doesn’t have the power to do a lot of prop-wash inducing tricks, or pull out of a high speed dives like a bigger quad, but it’s perfect for indoors and small spaces. My flight time was about 2 min on the 205mAh batteries and 2.5-3 mins on 255mAh batteries. This is only about 30 seconds less than my brushed Tiny Whoop.

Take a look at my test run in the video below:

THOUGHTS

I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to go back to flying brushed Tiny Whoop builds. The flight improvements that the brushless motors introduce are massive. The authority, power, and throttle resolution on this build kept me wanting to fly pack after pack. This is a new generation of Tiny Whoops. With these motors I feel like I can fly indoors with nearly the style and authority of my 5″ freestyle mini quads. I haven’t put these motors through the gauntlet yet, but I can’t find anything critical to say about them. They fly amazing and they’re more durable than the brushed motors I sometimes have to replace. This is Jessie Perkin’s first Tiny Whoop brushless motor. I’d say he nailed it!
